According to the Labor Department, 20% of adult women, that’s one in 5, spend time caring for an older relative. All while you’re working, running a business, involved with children and grandchildren, and trying to have a life. Maybe you, too? The good news is that there are people figuring out this whole thing way before me. In fact, my gal pal Stella is one of them. In today’s episode, you can listen to our conversation about what she’s done to take care of herself while taking care of her aging parents.
Stella Capocelli Carter is the CEO of Tour Plan International. She is also a wife, mother, and caregiver. In her work, Stella facilitates group travel trips and individual travel advisory services. She has a full life in addition to caring for her parents.
In this episode, we talk about:
Here’s a glance:
[7:26] Stella is a Solid Sister with a twist who loves pink and cheering other people on.
[9:51] Stella paints a picture of her caregiving role and how it impacts her and her family.
[15:37] Stella’s elderly father is fiercely independent and adopting a new, more fragile identity is difficult for him.
[22:42] Like taking on a new business project, taking in your parents should be researched and dealt with objectively.
[35:32] Stella shares her personal self-care practices including having an attitude of gratitude.
[39:49] How to overcome caregiver guilt and make time for your well-being.
[51:06] Compassionate Cranberry is the nail color Stella would create for herself.
[55:48] In the Flip the Chip segment, Mary highlights three practical tips for yourself while taking care of aging parents.
“If I am not healthy and sane, I can't help my aging parent.” — Mary Foley on @livelikeyournailcolor
“We had to start looking at the care that could be provided in the home other than the children, and it led to all kinds of serious ‘chip’ happening.” — Stella Capocelli Carter on @livelikeyournailcolor
“Guilt is probably one of the biggest emotions that came out as a result of all these changes that needed to be made with caregiving and providing.” — Stella Capocelli Carter on @livelikeyournailcolor
